Recently I’ve learned that there are times in life for music writing and times in life for other things. Unfortunately, both Cassie and I are deeply embroiled in other things right now, which leaves no time for music writings. We’ll still be out buying our favorite albums and seeing the fantastic local bands Denver has to offer, but for now and maybe forever we won’t be writing about them, not on Wayward Panties anyhow. So, thanks to everyone that took the time to read our posts and thanks to all the great bands that sent us their music to listen to. I’ll leave you with this last tip: check out Young Coyotes, you won’t regret it.

Pay Attention To: The Octopus Project

tiffany | General Music Topics | Wednesday, 06 August 2008

I’ve been a fan of The Octopus Project for a while now so I was glad to hear that they released an 7-inch on UK label Too Pure (the label that first brought us Stereolab) earlier this year. The 7-inch features two new songs, “Wet Gold” and “Moon Boil,” recorded by the band and mastered at Abbey Road in London. Sounds pretty cool. But, you can decide for yourself. Have a listen.

MP3- Wet Gold

The group has also kicked off a summer tour that will last for the next month, ending at ACL. Beyond that they released this pretty cool video created by Phillip Niemeyer of the Brooklyn design studio Double Triple and San Francisco-based filmmaker Ryan Junell.

Niemeyer describes the project as a sort of D.I.Y. cell animation. The two designers employed a variety of animation techniques: photocopying images onto office quality transparencies, layering them with a light table and a set of overhead projectors, silk-screening color fields, and adding ink with each print to create motion-gradations. They animated the light fluctuations of the double fluorescent tubes that hang above their main work table and, with the assistance of Double Triple partner Dana McClure, animated blown ink and paint seen through a macro lens. “We used over 5,000 still pictures, often layered over each other at variable rates of speed,” said Niemeyer. “Our frame rates are so quick I’m not sure it still counts as stop motion.”

Busy, busy bees making music that makes my ears happy.

The DPUMS is taking over your life…

tiffany & cassie | General Music Topics | Friday, 18 July 2008

Well, it should be anyway. This year is the 8th annual Denver Post Underground Music Showcase. Remember how awesome it was last year? It’s going to be ever better this time around. Why’s that, you ask? Because it’s expanded to 2 days with more than 100 of you favorite local acts.

Check out the schedule here, the artists here and the venues here. Then go buy your pass here. It’ll be the best 20 bucks you’ve spent in a long time - not counting a recent foray to Mexico.

In the coming weeks Wayward Panties will follow their tradition of highlighting some acts to see and venues to while away your days. We love you DPUMS!

Happy times again

Sad Times

tiffany & cassie | General Music Topics | Monday, 23 June 2008

Due to increasing work loads, lots of travel and numerous obligations Wayward Panties will be taking a hiatus. We hope to be back within a couple of weeks because life without Denver music is no life at all. Keep rockin’ D-town!

Tiffany’s Birthday playlist: The Cassie/Tiff Good Memories Edition

cassie | General Music Topics | Friday, 13 June 2008

I realized today that I’ve been in Denver now for nearly three years, and have been friends with Tiffany for nearly two of those. In that time, we’ve hit lots and lots of rock shows, lots and lots of bars with jukeboxes, and rode around on our bikes to the tune of a tinny boombox in a basket. So there are lots of great songs that make me think of Tiffany moments. Here are my top ten:

1. Wreckless Eric, “Whole Wide World.” Not only is this a great song that has a great role in a great movie, it’s a great song to which Tiffany and I have danced our asses off to, annoying her downstairs neighbors. Ah well.

2. Travis Morrison Hellfighters, “I’m Not Supposed To Like You (But).” Ah, cocktails at Tiffany’s to TMH. I believe this was playing during a brunch we had not too long ago, and I remember really digging this song when she later had me review the album. Maybe it was the strong association it carried with strong mimosas and bacon.

3. Madonna, “Lucky Star.” I’m not even sure this is the exact Madonna song that was playing when I was helping Tiff paint her positively Wonka-esque hallway, but it will always remind me of getting yellow paint all over me on that hot summer day.

4. Spinto Band, “Oh Mandy.” I am not even *that* into Spinto Band, but this song just screams Tiffany. It’s as light and bright as a candy necklace and while I can’t point to a specific time I heard it when I was with Tiffany, it just seems like the kind of song that should follow her around, like “Dream Weaver” follows Tia Carrere in “Wayne’s World.”

5. Everything Absent or Distorted, “Exit Parade.” Tiffany and I first met at an EAOD show, and became friends mostly because we kept seeing each other at EAOD shows. We have danced onstage to this song, we have danced offstage to this song. When we’re old and living in the Patsy home, we’ll probably dance in our chairs to this song.

6. Johnny Cash and June Carter, “Family Circle.” I just remember that this is a song that was playing when Tiffany and I were pretending to be pool sharks at Gabors once. Ah, good times.

7. Bel Biv Devoe, “Poison.” C’mon, Tiff. You know all the worlds. Can’t trust a big butt and a smile.

8. Journey, “Don’t Stop Believin’.” If there was ever a song to be sung drunkenly and irreverently while riding bicycles and wearing wigs, this would be the one.

9. Arcade Fire: ” No Cars Go.” I just remember the group of us being dumbfounded by this show on red rocks last year, and especially by this song. One of the best shows, ever.

10. Pelle Carlberg, “Clever Girls Like Clever Boys Much More Than Clever Boys Like Clever Girls.” This reminds me of countless times that Megan, Tiffany and I haven hung out at one or the other’s houses, and listened to music. Because even though Pelle Calrberg is a relatively obscure artist, you can find his music at all three of our houses. The music is kind of our lifeline to each other, an ever-expanding web of connections that keep us together, and sometimes even manages to draw in strangers from outside. We make mix CDs, we send promos to eachother, we share music tips like some girls share a hot newfound shopping secret.

So happy b-day to Tiffany, and I hope your thirties continue to be all about music, cocktails, writing, and random wiggery.

My friends over at Fanatic sent me quite of few of these with the idea that very few of us watching music videos on MTV any longer. (I didn’t even know they played music videos any more, I thought all videos had been moved to MTV 437.) Anyway here are a couple of videos that I enjoyed.

Setting Sun, “No Devil Me No More” - Not only do I really like this song, this video is kind of creepy…

Pomegranates, “Whom/Who” - What can I say? I’m a sucker for badly imitated robots (and proper grammar.)

This is Ivy League, “London Bridges” - I’m not sure about the video, although there is a lot of frolicking and funny hats, but I do enjoy the song.

A Faulty Chromosome, “Jackie O(fficially sun-drenched video)” - I included this one simply because it has some of the most hilariously bad dancing I’ve seen.

d. biddle, Recording part 1 - Okay, so this is technically not a music video, but you can hear snippets of their songs from the CD they are releasing this Friday (a show you will be at if you have any sort of sense.)

Aw shucks. We are blushing over here at Wayward Panties because of the love we receive. Today it comes from Uncensored Interview. Not only did they put us in their favorite Indie and Lifestyle sites, we’re right at the top. Read about it here.

Then go check out Uncensored Interview because they are completely awesome. If I made a top 10 list they’d be on it, too.
