Sea Wolf at the Larimer Lounge
The first band was The Dualistics, but I didn’t make it there in time to see them. Luckily though I made it time for the second band Hello Kavita. This band has been called one of Denver’s top talent groups and I agree. Although they faced some sound challenges at the beginning of their set, once everything was worked out I thought their music was really pretty. It kind of reminded me of twangy Death Cab songs because they were so soft and melancholy. Sadly they don’t have any CDs for sale yet, but I hear they should in the next month or two so be on the lookout for those.
Was it my imagination or was every photographer in Denver at the show last night to take pictures of Sea Wolf?
Sea Wolf is a band that apparently doesn’t mess around. They set up their stuff, had some sort of pow-wow in the corner and then took the stage and played their set with very little chatter. They didn’t even give the obligatory “we only have 2 more songs.” Then they left the stage for, oh about 20 seconds before returning for the encore. I like that no frills kind of performance. And frankly, Sea Wolf’s music is so good they don’t really need a lot of frills.
The music is sort of soft, but always has some oomph to it so just when you get lost in the dreamy music that Alex Church is singing the band takes it up a few notches to remind you they like to have fun, too.
Sea Wolf played most if not all of the songs from their latest album “Leaves in the River” and Church is a pretty entertaining frontman. Although, I think the stage at the Larimer was a bit too small for him because he kept backing into guitarist Aaron Robinson and the drum kit. It seems he wanted to stretch out his dancing limbs, but never had enough space.
Sea Wolf was another one of those Larimer Lounge shows where you can’t help but feel a bit of music magic in the air and feel ever so lucky to be living in Denver where you can watch bands of this caliber at places so intimate. Even if the sound isn’t always that great, the experience surpasses any of those problems.

such a lovely show. way too short - but soooo lovely.
and yeah, photographers abounded that night. odd. but cool!
